Close Before You Doze

MUST SEE VIDEO (Scroll Down): Why Should EVERYONE Close Their Bedroom Doors Before Going To Bed?

Battalion Fire Cheif Jim Resnik from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spoke at our meeting today and I guess you can say I'm all FIRED UP about Fire Safety and #CloseBeforeYouDoze! He even brought his WAKE UP Mobile #CloseBeforeYouDoze awareness center.

Did you know that a closed door can mean the difference between life and death in a house fire? Most people don't know that. In fact, new research shows that only 29% of people consistently sleep with the door closed. Most people don't realize that the furnishings in modern homes are made of a lot more synthetic materials so they burn a lot faster than the old natural cotton-filled furnishings. About 40 years ago, we used to have about 17 minutes to get out of our home safely in the event of a house fire after the smoke alarm sounded. Today, we only have about 3 minutes. Fire safety professionals would like you to know that the simple barrier of your bedroom door can help preserve critical minutes that can allow you to escape and your children to survive uninjured while you work to get to them in the event of a house fire.

Key Takeaways:

1) Have WORKING smoke detectors on every level of your home, both inside and outside of every sleeping area.

2) Have an escape plan and PRACTICE it! Get out and stay out until the fire professionals arrive.

3) Always remember to #CloseBeforeYouDoze!
